DOUBLE HOMOZYGOUS
Quiet, well mannered, blue eyed daughter of Strait Gunsmokensugar, 2005 World Show - earned the Oscar Crigler Cattle Award and was named the High-Point Western Horse and All-Around Horse. The stallion was exhibited by J.D. Yates of Pueblo, Colorado, and Robbie Boyce of Jacksboro, Texas. Strait Gunsmokensugar was the Reserve World Champion in Senior Tie-Down Roping and Senior Working Cow Horse. He also had two Top 10 finishes at the show.  Strait from Texas was an 8 time world champion, highest open performance point stallion in the history of the APHA, first and only stallion to earn more than 2000 plus open performance points.  And then there's his sire - Ris Key Business himself with his miles and miles of accomplishments listed on our home page.
Three generations on the sire's side of incredible athletes.  NOW check out the dam's side.  Dam is an own daughter of Smart Like Lena - NCHA earner of over $19,000.  ........Two 2006 breedings sold on the Western Bloodstock sale for $17,000.
We are not making any attempt to ride this one.  Even though she is about the quickest, most athetic mare you'll ever find and would excel in the cutting pen, we have a more pressing use for her as a broodmare. Once we get some Ris Key babies from her, we'll concentrate on showing them.
This filly has tested HOMOZYGOUS FOR TOBIANO AND BLACK.  She will be rebred to Ris Key.  Confirmed in foal to Ris Key for 2009

Summers Breeze
2003 black tobiano mare
Sire: Super Bee Tuff
Dam: Summer Sea Breeze

blackieright.jpg

blackieleft.jpg

This is a big, kind mare.  She's very quiet and gentle and will be started under saddle immediately.  (April 2008) She stands a good 15.1.....maybe 15.2 with a lot of body bulk and the straighest legs I've ever seen on a horse - front and back.
She has all the 'spots and dots' you'd expect on a homozygous tobiano, however she's never been tested for tobiano or black.  We will be doing that immediately as well.  Until tested, and until we get more than 30 days ride on her, she is priced very reasonably at
$2000 (includes first 30 days training)

June, 2007, we just took this mare (and her sorrel filly by a son of Paddys Irish Whiskey - also for sale) in on partial trade for an AQHA mare.  We were impressed with her paperwork before we saw her, but when the owners pulled her off that trailer - even after the 17 hour ride from Salt Lake City - we were just as impressed with her in person.  Nice mare.   Friendly, easy to get along with and sweet little filly by her side.  It's late enough in the season, we will not breed her for 2008.  She was ridden quite a bit before the age of 4, and so once her filly is weaned, we'll get her back under saddle and see exactly what type of rider she is best suited to.
BOTH dam and sire are NRHA champions, BOTH are APHA world champions in reining(and working cow for the dam), BOTH have their APHA superiors in reining (also working cow for the dam) BOTH have been #1 on multiple APHA honor rolls...etc., etc, etc.......
Left open in 2007 to tune up her riding.  Our current plans are to breed her to Ris Key Business in the spring of 2008, if not sold prior.  If sold prior YOU are entitled to a half priced breeding to any of our stallions!

2000 bay tobiano mare
Dam: Doc Bar Jo (by Docs Drift Bar/Doc Bar)
Sire: Doc O Flicker (by Doc O Lena)

lena0844.jpg

Gorgeous mare with a sweet personality.  Quiet and well broke enough for an experience child, or novice adult, but still enough 'go' to make her a lot of fun for more experienced riders.  She's been used at many different cow events, including team penning and team sorting.  She's also had some cutting training as well as used extensively as a trail horse to include many overnight camping trips.  She's 15 hands with an outstanding pedigree.  She is sired by NCHA Futurity Finalist, Doc O Flicker. He earned $31,509 and is an own son of NCHA Futurity Champion, Doc O'Lena. Doc O Flicker's dam is Flickerbelle, an APHA Champion with ROM in Cutting and earner of 69 points in Western Pleasure. Doc O Flicker is the sire of Gaybar Drifter, earner of 161 points and APHA #1 Honor Roll Champion TWICE in Cutting.
Doc O Flicker's sire is  Doc Olena NCHA Futurity Champion AQHA Hall of Fame - by Doc Bar: AQHA Hall Of Fame (Inducted 1993), 36 Halter Points & Race Money-earner SI-95, out of Poco Lena.
Lena's dam is also a granddaughter of Doc Bar - AQHA Hall of Fame.
Lena is healthy and 100% sound.  No bad habits or vices, etc...    She will be rebred to Ris Key Business.

Peg Shannon*
1989 sorrel overo
Sire: Slipalong Mack (Brujo by Skips Lad)
Dam: Birthday Gift -QH- (Leo Sunsan by Leo San)

PegShannon.jpg

Tall, big bodied and very mellow would describe this mare. Her babies all seem to have 'different' personality.  They are always so laid back that, at first, you get the impression the elevator doesn't always travel to the top floor. In truth - they've all proven to be extremely intelligent. Peg Shannon's pedigree traces directly to Skipper W, through her gsire, Brujo. There's some good old time QH breeding here. She has not only Skips Lad still on her papers, but also Leo San. This mare is sweet, kind and gentle. Rides very well, gentle enough for a novice. Peg had a leg injury a few years ago that has left a permanent scar on her rear leg, but is travelling sound. Although it's been many years since she's been ridden, I would guarantee her sound to trail ride. She is otherwise healthy, sound and has no vices.

This is a sweet daughter of Ris Key.  Her multi colored mane and tail (don't know what color to call it) makes her stand out in the crowd.  She's very quiet and friendly, easy to be around - even in the middle of the pasture.  Her dam is a 15.1 granddaughter of Brujo out of a gdtr of Leo San.  It will be interesting watching this one grow up.  I know she has great conformation and personality, but other than that, it's a 'wait and see' on her.  Definitely will make a great all around and/or 4-H project......might make a rope horse.  With her personality adn her pedigree, there's little doubt she'll be an excellent broodmare prospect in addition to her duties under saddle
**UPDATE**  June, 2008 started her first 30 days.  Wow. What a quiet, gentle sweetheart she is!!

This mare is turning into the prettiest horse on the place.  If you've been here and seen our horses, you'd realize what a compliment that is......especially for being 'just a sorrel'.

Smart Lilly
2002 chestnut mare
Sire:  Color Me Smart
Dam: Docs Lil Sprat (by Doc's Jack Sprat/Doc Bar)

lillybuttnov.jpg

lillylftnov.jpg

lillyrtnov.jpg

Yes, she is a daughter of Color Me Smart, BUT she's also the best looking daughter of Color Me Smart I've ever seen.  AND her bottom side is the best I've ever seen as well!  Lilly also has a FULL BROTHER that just won the APHA world championship (2007) in reining.
Lets start with Color Me Smart (in case you live under a rock and have never heard of him) ........
Color Me Smart is not only an incredible athlete himself - as proven when he won the 1997 world championship, but an incredible sire - as APHA's first 2 million
dollar sire
Sired JR Playboy by Color( $174,771), the 2003 Super Stakes Open Gelding Champion, JR Colord Prom($141,851), 2000 Super Stakes Open Champion and JR Red Diablo($156,399), the 2002 NCHA Open Super Stakes Champion. That means that Color Me Smart's offspring have won cutting's largest and most prestigious 4 year old event in 3 of the past 4 years.

Now take a look at Lilly's dam: Docs Lil Sprat.....Never mind that she's a daughter of Doc's Jack Sprat o/o daughter of Doc's Jack Frost.  Just look at what she's already produced! (In addition Lilly's W.Champ brother mentioned above)
Dam of Chics Magic Man (by Smart Chic Olena), 66 AQHA points; High point Jr Reining Champion, 3rd in the Nation in AQHA High Point Jr Reining; AQHA Superior Reining, 4th, 2001 Austrian Non-Pro Classic,  Chics Medicine Man (by Smart Chick Olena), $3365 and 17.5 AQHA points; finalist in the Congress Open Reining Futurity; Limited Non-Pro Winner at the North Coarlina Extravanganza Derby; Rookie Champion at ht eIllinios International Stock Show; AQHA ROM; Dam of the Carol Rose Ranch Jr sire OOH CISCO by Shining Spark.

The family of Doc's Jack Sprat runs deep in the record books.  He was sired by the legendary Doc Bar, who had probably the greatest influence on the cutting industry ever!  Many believe the greatest cross for Doc Bar was with the blood of Poco Tivio.  Doc's Jack Sprat was a product of this cross.  His dam, Pura Fina was by Puro Tivio.  Pura Fina was a line bred King mare.  Three Bars, King, Poco Bueno, and Texas Dandy all appear in the pedigree of Doc's Jack Sprat, and they are ALL members of the AQHA Hall Of Fame.
Doc's Jack Sprat started his show career by winning the 2 year old stallion class at the Denver Stock Show.  He later went on to become an AQHA Champion with 15 halter points, 14 western pleasure points, and 29 cutting points.  He was an NCHA Derby Semi-Finalist, and earned his NCHA Certificate of Ability.
The role of Doc's Jack Sprat as a sire is a picture of consistency.  He has finished no lower than 16th on the leading sire lists during the years 1989 to 1994.  He finished 11th on this list in 1990 through 1993.  His foals earned (NCHA money)  $214,647 in 1989,  $294,090 in 1990, $271,017 in 1991, $232,170 in 1992, $220,705 in 1993, and 252,009 in 1994.  This consistency has resulted in a yearly average of $247,444 (through 1994).  All together,  Doc's Jack Sprat's get have won over 3 million in NCHA money.

She does not ride (I do not care), she is not really even sound to ride (once again - I do not care) What I do care about (in addition to the information above) is that she is easy to catch, does have great ground manners, AND a great disposition.  Lilly will be bred to Ris Key Business in the spring....now confirmed in foal for 2009!!   Looking forward to a getting a LOT of foals from this good, young, quality mare!

Dam: Go Black Sheba Go (by Little Black Bear)
Sire: Status Continental (by Impeccable Status)

gigiright.jpg

This 'I'm your best buddy' mare stands15 hands, and is 100% sound to ride or breed.  Foaled gorgeous b/w in 2006, was not exposed for 2007 since the previous owners sold their stallion before breeding season.  Rides quiet and gentle....but still green.  12/29/06 - Hadn't been ridden for almost 2 years and we got right on and rode her.  We're still trying to figure out all her 'buttons', the previous trainer appears to have used some unique methods.....but things are progressing nicely so far. She definitely wants to please. Very nice, kind mare, great mother.  One blue eye!   2/07/07 - We've got about 30 days on this mare now and she's riding very nicely.  Walk/trot/lope, etc.  Appears to be a western pleasure prospect.  Very, very quiet.....hard to find anything that will spook this mare.  Could be a kid's horse with a little more time on her back.  Price is due to increase shortly.....
Will be bred to Ris Key in the spring - or can be purchased with 1/2 priced breeding to any of our stallions if you'd prefer.
GiGi has tested positive for being homozygous black......so only black based paint foals will be produced, regardless of the color of the sire.
Sweet mare to be around, excellent mother.  I wish all of our broodmares could have her personality.
'GiGi' is priced at $2500

Bred May, 2009 to our grullo homozygous stallion for a guaranteed grullo or black tobiano foal in 2010.

I LOVE the color and markings on this sweet young mare.  She has outstanding conformation and a real working horse pedigree.  Her dam stands close to 15 hands, her sire a bit under that.  We have a full sister of her, she stands at least an inch taller than her dam. Hmmmm.  Since her dam's sire was not only a superior reiner, but did well at halter (and produced a number of halter greats), I'd assume that height comes from that part of the pedigree.    She also did well with her few lessons under saddle.   UPDATE: 1/24/06.  30 days ride on this filly and not a single buck out of this one.  Walk, trot, canter both directions, with a great 'whoa'.  Incredible soft jog and slow lope.  All arena work so far.  Another 30 days ride this past winter (2006/2007) and she didn't forget a thing!!  Great mare!

Big (15.2), gorgeous mare.  Barn name Angel.  She's a lover, always looking for attention.  Nice trail horse, travels great in a group but just as well all by herself.  Never given any indication of becoming 'buddy sour' or 'barn sour'.  Doesn't know much as far as neck reining, giving to leg pressure, or much in the way of arena work - but she sure wouldn't think of hurting anyone. The basics of a safe horse are there.  Good whoa, backs, gives her head to turn, etc.  Come see this mare, her beauty and personality will convince you to take her home.  You can always teach her that other stuff, you can't teach personality!!

She has a beautiful looooong neck and very correct conformation with that rare grulla color.  I think she'll look a lot  like her dam  when she's mature.  You can take at the dam at on the APHA broodmare's page if you want an idea of what you'll end up with.  She definitely has more of momma's height (15.1) than daddy's.  (At this point I'd guess she'll be taller than momma)
Very quiet, very willing.  Price includes first 30 days ride, completed in July, 2007.  **UPDATE: another 30 days started July, 2008.  A little more 'gas' than she had as a 2 year old!
($2500)

Look what I just traded for.....

TWO black tovero daughters of A Tru Rolex!  Full sisters, both homozygous black.  Neither one tested for homozygousity of the tobiano gene, but I will do that in the next week or so.  Price increase will reflect results of thoses tests, if either proves to be double homozygous.   Heck, even if they aren't homozygous, just being tovero means their foals already have a 75% chance of having 'color' (bred to a solid stud).

See the big sister on the 2006 foals page,.

For anyone that does not know of A Tru Rolex, here's a brief summary.  Ris Key Business' son, Strait from Texas, owned the rights to be called the all time leading open performance point earner in APHA history for many years.  Strait died last year.  Since then he has been passed in points by A Tru Rolex.  Now Rolex is the all time leading open performance point earner in APHA history.  Similar disciplines for both stallions......heading, heeling, steer stopping, and working cow horse.
A Tru Rolex has over 3,300 performance points with 3 Reserve World titles and is a 4x Congress Champion.  A Tru Rolex is a 2004 2x APHA Reserve World Champion; Senior Amateur Heading & Senior Open Heeling and the 2000 APHA Reserve World Champion-Junior Amateur Heeling.  He has 9 Superiors and #1 Honor Roll in 5 events.
I am looking forward to crossing Ris Key on the older sister next summer.  While I'd like to wait another year or two - Ris Key is already 24 years old.  If I wait too long, it might just be too late!

This gorgeous filly has had months of professional cutting training, as well as several weeks of 'fun' cutting sessions with a non-pro.  She is easily one of the most athletic horses we've ever had here....so experienced riders only!  Great NCHA potential!!
Even if you don't want/need a cutting horse, check the pedigree.  With her talent, conformation and bloodlines, she is a true broodmare candidate.

Sammy Pepaleo
1996 sorrel tobiano mare
Dam: Nuggets Bambino
Sire: Little Pepaleo(by Peppy San Badger, out of a daughter of War Leo)

sammypep.jpg

mvc-040s.jpg

This is a quiet and gentle mare. She's just finished 30 days of riding and really took to the training well. (At age 5) She is cooperative and quiet enough for most people to trail ride. She stands about 15 hands tall and is very broad.  She is sound and has no vices or bad habits, other than she can be quite difficult to catch in the open pasture. Her sire is an OWN son of the great Peppy San Badger and out of a daughter of War Leo (this daughter of War Leo also goes back to King) Her sire, Little Pepaleo, is a money earner ($16,000 +),  a Texas Classic Senior Breeders finalist, and a semi-finalist in the NCHA Open Super Stakes.  Sammys dam goes back to Three Bars a few times as well as Joe Reed, Peppy, Whizaway and King. Seven out of the eight ggrandparents are QH.
Priced at $2500.
